The Growing Longevity Lifestyle Trend: Why Eye Health Is a Long Term Investment

Fimela.com, Jakarta – The term longevity has become increasingly popular in recent years. While healthy living was once mainly associated with maintaining a balanced diet and exercising regularly, more people are now focusing on staying active, independent, and productive well into older age.

The concept of longevity goes beyond simply living longer (lifespan). It also emphasizes healthspan, or maintaining good health and quality of life throughout the aging process. The goal is to enjoy a longer life while remaining healthy enough to continue daily activities with minimal limitations.

As Indonesia’s life expectancy continues to rise, awareness of investing in long-term health is also growing. However, despite increasing efforts to maintain overall health, one important aspect is still often overlooked: eye health.

Eye Health Supports Everyday Life

Vision is one of the most essential senses for everyday activities. Working on a computer, driving, reading, and spending time with family all depend on healthy eyesight.

Modern lifestyles require our eyes to work harder than ever before. Today, many daily activities involve digital screens, including online meetings, responding to messages, reading documents, and enjoying entertainment on smartphones and other devices.

According to dr. Zoraya Ariefia Feranthy, Sp.M, Ophthalmologist at Mayapada Eye Centre (MEC), prolonged digital device use forces the eyes to focus on nearby objects for extended periods, increasing the risk of eye strain and refractive errors such as myopia (nearsightedness) and astigmatism.

These conditions are no longer limited to a specific age group. Young adults and working professionals are increasingly relying on glasses or contact lenses to perform their daily activities.

Although wearing glasses is not a problem in itself, some people find that corrective eyewear can affect their comfort while working, exercising, or performing activities that require high mobility.

Presbyopia Becomes Another Challenge With Age

In addition to refractive errors, the natural aging process also brings another common eye condition: presbyopia, also known as age-related farsightedness.

This condition usually begins around the age of 40. One of the earliest signs is difficulty reading small print or focusing on nearby objects, causing people to instinctively hold books or smartphones farther away to see more clearly.

According to dr. Ucok P. Pasaribu, Sp.M(K), Consultant Ophthalmologist at Mayapada Eye Centre, the gradual loss of near focusing ability is a natural part of aging.

However, in today’s digital era, the symptoms may become more noticeable because the eyes are constantly required to focus at close distances throughout the day.

Protecting Your Vision Should Start Early

These changes highlight the importance of making eye health part of a long-term wellness strategy rather than waiting until vision problems begin to interfere with everyday life.

Taking proactive steps to maintain healthy vision can help support independence, productivity, and overall quality of life as people age.
