High Screen Time Increases Eye Health Risks, MEC Introduces Technology-Based Early Detection Services

HerStory, Jakarta — Mayapada Eye Centre (MEC) has officially opened its newest clinic at Mayapada Tower 2, Sudirman, South Jakarta, as part of its effort to expand access to premium eye care services for office professionals and urban communities. The presence of MEC Sudirman aims to address the growing risk of vision problems caused by high digital screen exposure, while strengthening early detection and eye care services supported by advanced diagnostic technology.

The clinic offers a range of eye subspecialty services, including cornea, glaucoma, retina, and pediatric ophthalmology, under a Premium Boutique Eye Care concept. The facility is designed to support integrated care pathways, a personalized patient experience, and service efficiency—aligned with the needs of the productive-age population in business districts.

President Director & CEO of Mayapada Healthcare, Navin Sonthalia, stated that MEC is part of the company’s strategy to strengthen its centers of excellence within the Mayapada Hospital network.

“MEC is part of the Mayapada Hospital ecosystem, delivering high-standard eye care that is clinically excellent and connected to various Centers of Excellence across the network. This integrated approach ensures that eye conditions associated with other medical issues can be managed comprehensively,” he said.

Chief Operating Officer of Mayapada Eye Centre, Navin Nathani, added that the expansion into Sudirman is designed based on the working patterns of urban professionals.

“In the daily lives of urban professionals, prolonged exposure to digital screens—from computers, laptops, and smartphones—often leads to issues such as dry eyes, digital eye strain, and difficulty focusing, which directly impact productivity,” he explained.

According to him, MEC Sudirman offers advanced, modern, and easily accessible eye care solutions to help maintain vision quality without disrupting daily work routines.

Supported by a team of ophthalmologists and subspecialists, MEC Sudirman provides comprehensive services, including modern cataract surgery (phacoemulsification), trabeculectomy for glaucoma, and retinal care services. Integration with the Mayapada Hospital network enables multidisciplinary collaboration in managing patients with comorbidities such as diabetes, stroke, neurological disorders, autoimmune diseases, and heart conditions.

Consultant Ophthalmologist at MEC, dr. Ucok P. Pasaribu, Sp.M(K), noted that many eye diseases are progressive and often show no early symptoms.

“Factors such as excessive screen time, insufficient eye rest, and suboptimal workplace lighting can accelerate digital eye strain and other vision problems,” he said. With modern diagnostic technology, early detection and precise diagnosis can help prevent the risk of permanent vision impairment.

The launch of MEC Sudirman was also accompanied by the LVC (Laser Vision Correction) Summit on January 25, 2026, featuring scientific discussions and a live surgery demonstration of the SMILE® Pro procedure as part of efforts to advance medical education and adopt the latest ophthalmic technologies.
