What is Keratoconus ?
Keratoconus is an eye condition where the cornea — the clear, dome-shaped front part of the eye — gradually becomes thinner and bulges outward into a cone-like shape.
Ideally, the cornea should be perfectly curved like a ball to help focus light accurately onto the retina. But when the shape of the cornea changes, light entering the eye becomes scattered, leading to:
-
Blurry vision
-
Excessive glare
-
Difficulty seeing clearly at night
-
Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription
Keratoconus often begins during the teenage years or early 20s, and the condition can worsen over time if not treated early.
What Does Keratoconus Feel Like?
Many patients report that their vision remains unclear even when wearing glasses. Some experience extreme sensitivity to light or find it hard to focus when looking at whiteboards, screens, or while driving at night.
If left untreated, keratoconus may progress to the point where a corneal transplant becomes necessary.

Crosslinking: A Solution to Stop Keratoconus Progression
Corneal Crosslinking is a non-surgical procedure designed to strengthen the corneal tissue and prevent keratoconus from getting worse.
How Does the Procedure Work?
Crosslinking is performed in two main steps:
-
Special eye drops containing Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) are applied to the eye.
-
The cornea is then exposed to UV light for several minutes.
The combination of UV light and riboflavin helps form stronger bonds between collagen fibers in the cornea, making it more rigid and stable.
Benefits of Corneal Crosslinking
-
Slows or halts the progression of keratoconus
-
Helps maintain the natural shape of the cornea
-
Reduces the risk of needing a corneal transplant
-
Fast, safe, and minimally painful procedure
Who Is a Good Candidate for Crosslinking?
This treatment is most effective for patients who:
-
Have been diagnosed with early-stage keratoconus
-
Still have sufficient corneal thickness
The sooner the procedure is done, the better the long-term results.
