Corneal Crosslinking: A Solution to Stop Keratoconus Progression

What is Keratoconus ?

Keratoconus is an eye condition in which the cornea the clear, dome-shaped front part of the eye gradually becomes thinner and bulges outward into a cone like shape.

Normally, the cornea has a smooth and round curve that helps focus light accurately onto the retina. However, when the cornea changes shape, light entering the eye becomes scattered. Because of this, patients may experience:

  • Blurry vision

  • Excessive glare

  • Difficulty seeing clearly at night

  • Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription

In most cases, keratoconus begins during the teenage years or early 20s. In addition, the condition may continue to worsen over time if patients do not receive early treatment.

What Does Keratoconus Feel Like?

Many patients say their vision still feels unclear even while wearing glasses. Furthermore, some people become extremely sensitive to light. Others also struggle to focus when looking at whiteboards, computer screens, or while driving at night.

If left untreated, keratoconus may progress to the point where a corneal transplant becomes necessary.

Crosslinking: A Solution to Stop Keratoconus Progression

Corneal Crosslinking is a non-surgical procedure that strengthens corneal tissue and helps prevent keratoconus from getting worse.

How Does the Procedure Work?

Doctors perform corneal crosslinking in two main steps:

  1. Special eye drops containing Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) are applied to the eye.

  2. The cornea is then exposed to UV light for several minutes.

The combination of UV light and riboflavin creates stronger bonds between collagen fibers in the cornea. As a result, the cornea becomes more rigid and stable.

Benefits of Corneal Crosslinking

Corneal crosslinking offers several important benefits, such as:

  • Slows or halts the progression of keratoconus

  • Helps maintain the natural shape of the cornea

  • Reduces the risk of needing a corneal transplant

  • Fast, safe, and minimally painful procedure

Who Is a Good Candidate for Crosslinking?

This treatment is most effective for patients who:

  • Have been diagnosed with early-stage keratoconus

  • Still have sufficient corneal thickness

The sooner the procedure is done, the better the long-term results.
