Padel A Fun Sport with Potential Risks to Eye Health

Jakarta – Padel has recently become a highly popular sport enjoyed by many people. However, safety and protection during physical activities remain crucial—especially when it comes to eye health.

Despite its recreational appeal, padel carries potential risks to the eyes. As a highly sensitive organ, the eyes require proper care and protection to avoid vision problems or injuries.

One of the main concerns lies in the speed and dynamics of the game. Padel involves fast-moving balls and close-range play, which can lead to complex eye injuries. Unlike tennis, padel rackets are solid and do not have strings, making them harder upon impact. Although the ball is lighter, its speed and movement can be more difficult for the eyes to track compared to tennis or badminton.

“Many people are now interested in this sport, but the ball moves very fast. I have personally treated several cases of eye injuries caused by padel balls. The speed of the ball is quite different from tennis or badminton, where the movement can be observed more gradually,” said Dr. Ucok Parlindungan Pasaribu, Sp.M(K) in Setiabudi, South Jakarta, on Wednesday (January 28).

He explained that high-speed padel balls can cause eye injuries, especially upon direct impact. In addition, the solid, stringless racket also poses a risk of accidental eye injuries, either from direct hits or collisions with other players. If not treated promptly, such injuries may lead to serious complications.

“Today, many sports carry extreme risks that can cause complex eye disorders. If eye injuries are not treated immediately, the damage may not only affect the cornea but also the retina, and could even trigger glaucoma—or worse, affect multiple parts of the eye,” he added.
