Dr. Syumarti, MD is an ophthalmologist with extensive experience in Community Ophthalmology. She completed her medical degree at the Faculty of Medicine, Maranatha Christian University in 1989, then earned her Ophthalmology Specialist degree from the Department of Ophthalmology, Universitas Padjadjaran in 2003. In 2004, she pursued further training and obtained a Master of Science in Community Eye Health from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom. She was awarded the title of Ophthalmology Consultant in 2010.
Her career began as a general practitioner in public health services for nearly eight years before focusing on the development of community eye care services and education. She has held several strategic roles in service management, including policy development and quality improvement programs in eye care. In addition to her clinical and academic roles, Dr. Syumarti has served as a medical adviser for various community-based eye health programs.
As a member of the Indonesian Medical Association (IDI) and the Indonesian Ophthalmologists Association (PERDAMI), she is active in education and blindness prevention initiatives. She is also involved in the Indonesian Community Ophthalmology Interest Group and the International Society of Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgeons. Her research interests include risk factors for eye diseases, prevalence of blindness in adult populations, diabetic retinopathy, and clinical characteristics and patient knowledge related to cataract in community-based programs.
