Dry Eyes During Fasting? Causes and How to Treat Them

During Ramadan, some individuals experience dry, irritated, or gritty eyes. This condition, known as dry eye, is common during fasting.

The main cause of dry eye during fasting is mild dehydration. The body does not receive fluids for more than twelve hours, which may reduce tear production. Tears are essential for maintaining moisture, protecting the cornea, and ensuring comfort while blinking.

Increased screen time is another risk factor. When staring at digital screens, blinking frequency decreases significantly. As a result, tears evaporate more quickly and the eye surface becomes dry.

Changes in sleep patterns during Ramadan also affect eye health. Lack of sleep can cause eye fatigue, redness, and light sensitivity.

Dry eye symptoms include burning sensation, itching, redness, temporary blurred vision, and eye strain. If untreated, this condition may interfere with daily productivity and worship activities.

To reduce dry eye risk, ensure adequate hydration during suhoor and iftar. Consume omega three rich foods such as fish, eggs, and nuts to support tear quality.

Limit screen exposure and apply the twenty twenty twenty rule. Every twenty minutes, look at a distant object for twenty seconds to relax the eyes.

Lubricating eye drops can help maintain moisture and are safe during fasting.

If symptoms persist or worsen, consult an eye specialist for proper evaluation.
